How to use blue tack as a smartphone car-mount

Blue tack is a reusable clay that is used to temporarily stick one thing to another, such as a poster to a wall. Well, it turns out that blue tack can also be used to mount a smartphone to the dashboard of a car!

All you need is to do is to stick one or two lumps of blue tack to a convenient spot on the dashboard, and then stick your smartphone to it. But before you try blue tack, know how it stacks up against conventional car-mounts. Here is a brief run-down:

Holding capability

In my experience, a blue tack car-mount is quite capable of supporting smartphones with screen sizes of up to 6 inches. Use a clamp-based car-mount if your smartphone is quite large or if you drive your car off-road.

Convenience

A blue tack car-mount works just like a magnetic car-mount. Just glom your smartphone to it upon entering your car and peel it away when you’re done driving. No need to fiddle with the clumsy spring-loaded clamps found on many types of conventional car-mount. What’s more, a blue tack car-mount works on smartphones that don’t stick to magnetic car-mounts.

Access to buttons and ports

Using blue tack as a car-mount will give you unimpeded access to all the switches and ports on the sides of your smartphone. In contrast, the clamps on some types of conventional car-mounts tend to block them.

Appearance

Blue tack is sold in a variety of colors. Choose a color that best matches your car’s dashboard. Admittedly, the sight bare blue tack on my car’s dash is a bit off-putting. But once I stick my smartphone to it, the blue tack disappears behind the phone and everything looks great!

Potential damage to your phone and dashboard

A conventional car-mount relies on mechanical force and/or magnetism to keep itself attached to the dashboard and to your smartphone. Prolonged use can damage the dashboard and the phone. In contrast, blue tack causes no damage. It does leave a small residue that can be easily wiped off.

Cost

Php300 (less than USD6.00) will buy enough blue tack to mount a smartphone to the dashboard. How does that compare with the car-mount you are eyeing?

Reusability

If for any reason you no longer need the blue tack as a car-mount, you can simply peel the blue tack off your dashboard and reuse it elsewhere. Think of it as an extra hand that holds things in place for you around the house, at work, or on the road.
