How to Fine-Tune Your Facebook Privacy Settings
For those of you who are on Facebook, I created a short video that explains how you can fine-tune your Facebook account's privacy settings.
"Why bother changing something that already works?," you may be wondering. Well, it’s to suit the way you use Facebook. If you are among the great majority of users who just want to reconnect and share with people who already know you, then you probably need to change some of the default settings in Facebook from “Public” or “Everyone” to “Friends” or Only me.” For you, it’s important to lock down the privacy settings to protect yourself and your loved ones from information thieves who have no qualms about faking your account, harvesting information about you and your friends, and using this information for nefarious purposes.
Conversely, if you are using Facebook as a marketing tool, then you might want to open up the privacy settings even more.
What sort of privacy information can you control in Facebook? Here are some examples:
- Who can see your posts
- Who can see your phone number, birthday, email address and other profile information
- Which apps and websites can get data about you and your friends from your Facebook account
- The people, pages and lists you follow
- Who can send you friend requests
- Who can see your friends list
- Who can look you up using the email address and phone number you provided
- Who can follow you
- Whether or or not your can be found in searches outside of Facebook
The video, which is biased towards locking down the privacy settings, will show you what you can do and how:
By the way, if you have an actual business that you want to promote on Facebook, consider creating a Facebook business page instead of using your regular account to market yourself and your product. That way, you can keep your business and private affairs separate from each other. It will also enable you to take advantage of Facebook’s business tools.
And whether you are a business or private user, you should develop a security-conscious attitude towards Facebook and other social media.
